Affective Polarization

This project concerns the question of why voters hold polarized views of in- and out-parties, how this affects democracy, and how democratic innovations could be used to mitigate negative effects from polarization.

Cleavage Transformations

This project looks into the transformation of political cleavages in response to the knowledge economy. As a result of the transformation, a particularistic-universalistic identity divide has emerged that can explain recent electoral developments.

Digital deliberative Democracy

This project develops a large scale online platform that facilitates deliberation and co-creation in the areas of public consultations and direct democratic initiatives.

Electoral Consideration Sets

This project develops a new theory of elections that views vote choice as a two-stage process combining heuristic and systematic processing steps. It uses the model to derive new insights about electoral democracy.

Party Research Meets AI

This project seeks to extract measures of party positions with a high resolution in time and space using large language models. It complements work I have done on the Chapel Hill Expert Survey.
